Implementing Montessori San Antonio 4

Our San Antonio Montessori school offers Shavano Park children a complete educational journey from infancy through elementary years. At Country Day Montessori, we believe children learn most effectively when they’re actively engaged in activities that interest them. Instead of sitting at desks listening to lectures, our students work with specially designed materials that make abstract concepts concrete and understandable. Teachers observe each child carefully, providing personalized guidance that supports their unique learning path. This approach builds true understanding rather than memorization. Shavano Park families choose us because our education develops the whole child – intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically – preparing them for success in school and beyond.

Our Programs include:

Infant Care (Newborn - 18 months)

Our infant care program creates a calm, loving environment where babies as young as 3 months feel secure and valued. Caregivers respond promptly to each infant’s needs while providing opportunities for movement, sensory exploration, and early language development. The carefully prepared spaces allow babies to discover their abilities at their own pace, building confidence from their earliest days.

Pre-Primary (18 months - 3 years)

Our Pre-Primary program channels toddlers’ growing independence into purposeful activities that develop coordination, language, and self-help skills. Children learn to pour their own drinks, prepare simple foods, care for their environment, and interact positively with others. These meaningful tasks satisfy their need for autonomy while building concentration and a sense of capability that forms the foundation for future learning.

Primary (3 - 6 years)

The Primary program opens a world of discovery as children develop reading, writing, mathematics, geography, science, art, and music skills through hands-on exploration. Using beautiful Montessori materials, students progress at their own pace, mastering concepts thoroughly before moving forward. The mixed-age classroom creates a community where younger children learn from older ones while older students reinforce their knowledge by helping others.

Lower Elementary (Grades 1-3)

Our Lower Elementary program builds on earlier learning with deeper exploration of language, mathematics, geometry, science, history, and cultural studies. Students work both independently and collaboratively on research projects, creative writing, and problem-solving activities. The curriculum responds to children’s growing interest in understanding how the world works, fostering critical thinking and a passion for discovery.

Upper Elementary (Grades 4-6)

The Upper Elementary program prepares students for future academic challenges with increasingly complex work across all subject areas. Students develop strong writing skills, scientific thinking, mathematical reasoning, and cultural awareness. They learn to manage long-term projects, conduct research, and present their findings effectively. This program fosters leadership, responsibility, and the self-discipline needed for success in any educational setting.

Summer Program

Our summer program provides a balance of learning and fun during school breaks, with themed activities, nature exploration, art projects, and special events. Children maintain academic skills while enjoying new experiences in a familiar, supportive environment. The program follows Montessori principles with a more relaxed summer pace that Shavano Park families appreciate during the hot Texas summer months.

Shavano Park parents appreciate that Montessori provides just the right challenge—never too easy or too difficult—for their child’s development.

Practical Life Skills

We go beyond academics, teaching essential life skills like time management, organization, and conflict resolution. Even young children learn to prepare food, clean up, and care for plants and animals, building confidence and independence. Shavano Park families often marvel at how capable their children become at home, thanks to the practical skills they develop in our Montessori environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Country Day Montessori from Shavano Park?

Our school is just a short 10-15 minute drive from most Shavano Park neighborhoods, making us a convenient option for local families. The drive is straightforward, primarily using major roads like NW Military Highway and Wurzbach Parkway. Many Shavano Park families appreciate our relatively close location combined with our spacious campus setting that wouldn’t be possible within more densely developed areas.

What makes Montessori education different from what my child would receive in Shavano Park area public schools?

The key differences include our mixed-age classrooms instead of single-grade groupings; hands-on learning materials rather than textbooks and worksheets; freedom of movement instead of assigned desks; individual pacing rather than whole-class instruction; and an emphasis on developing intrinsic motivation rather than working for grades or rewards. Our approach provides a more personalized education that respects each child’s development while fostering independence, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning that many Shavano Park families find missing in conventional settings.

Do you accommodate children with different learning styles?

Yes, the Montessori approach naturally adapts to different learning styles through its multi-sensory materials and individualized approach. Visual learners benefit from our carefully designed materials that make concepts visible. Kinesthetic learners thrive with our hands-on, movement-based activities. Auditory learners engage in small group lessons and discussions. Teachers observe each child and present information in ways that match how they learn best. This flexibility is particularly valuable for Shavano Park families whose children may not fit the one-size-fits-all approach of conventional education.

What security measures do you have in place to keep children safe?

Safety is our top priority. Our campus has controlled access points, and all visitors must check in at the office. Staff members undergo thorough background checks and are trained in emergency procedures. We practice regular safety drills with students and maintain clear protocols for student pick-up and drop-off. Our grounds are fully fenced, and children are supervised at all times when outdoors. Many Shavano Park parents tell us they chose our school partly because of the secure, nurturing environment we provide.

How do you incorporate into your curriculum?

We integrate age-appropriate safety education throughout our programs, teaching children about personal safety, emergency procedures, and community helpers like firefighters and police officers. Students learn practical skills like proper hand washing, safe use of materials, and what to do in various emergencies. We often welcome visitors from the Shavano Park Fire Department who provide demonstrations and safety information that reinforce these important lessons in a positive, non-frightening way.

What extracurricular activities do you offer for Shavano Park students?

Beyond our core Montessori curriculum, we offer several enrichment opportunities including motor development classes, art, and music. Our students also engage in gardening, animal care, and nature studies as part of our regular program. For elementary students, we provide opportunities for community service projects and leadership development. These activities complement our academic program by developing children’s physical abilities, creativity, and sense of responsibility to their community.

How do you help children transition from Montessori to traditional middle schools?

We prepare older students for future educational settings by gradually introducing more structured assignments, teaching study skills and time management, and discussing the differences they might encounter in other schools. Our Upper Elementary program helps children develop the independence, organization, and self-advocacy skills needed to succeed in any environment. We also maintain relationships with area middle schools to better understand their expectations. Most importantly, the strong academic foundation, love of learning, and confidence that Shavano Park children develop at Country Day Montessori serve them well wherever they go next.
